Everyone loves summer - the time of sunshine and vacation that we've waited all winter for! But if you're not careful summer can take a toll on your jewelry.
Before you jump in the pool, slather on the sunscreen or head to the beach be aware of where dangers can lurk. In honor of all the rings resting on the ocean floor, the bracelets ruined from gardening and the gems that have fallen victim to a game of beach volleyball, here are 10 tips to keep your jewelry shining all summer.
- Visit your jeweler to check for loose gemstones, prongs and clasps. It's easy to lose a piece of jewelry or individual stones if you're not giving your jewelry regular check ups.
- Remove your jewelry before swimming or strenuous activities. Salt water and chlorine can be damaging and sweat can make sterling silver jewelry tarnish quickly.
- Remove your jewelry before applying sunblock or bug spray. Substances like lotion can get stuck into the crevices of chains or prongs and can be hard to remove later. These products also leave a film on your jewelry, making it appear dull and dingy.
- Stay out of the sand and sun. Jewelry can be lost in sand and never found. The sun can bleach certain materials, especially natural elements and some plastics.
- Remove all jewelry before getting into a hot tub or swimming pool. The chlorine can damage and discolor metals and can slowly erode the finish and polish of gemstones.
- De-bling before gardening. Dirt and small rocks are abrasive to jewelry. Gardening gloves can be dangerous, too. Prongs and gemstones can catch on them and rings can slip off when you take off gloves.
- Don't wear rings in cold water. The cold temperature in pools, oceans, lakes and rivers causes your finger size to shrink temporarily. When this happens, rings can easily slip off fingers without you being aware of it - until it's too late.
- Clean your jewelry regularly. Sweat and body oils can dull the shine of your jewelry. At home, clean your jewelry with warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush. At the end of the summer, visit your jewelry and have your jewelry inspected and professionally cleaned.
- Store your jewelry in a clean, dry place. Keep your jewelry in a fabric-lined jewelry case or a jewelry box with compartments and dividers to prevent pieces from scratching each other.
- Get your jewelry insured. It will give you peace of mind knowing your jewelry is protected.
